Martinique Deep-Sea Fishing Guide: How to Prepare for Your Trip
Target species, the best seasons, fishing techniques and what to expect on a trip with Carib Évasion: this Martinique deep-sea fishing guide covers everything you need to know before you head offshore.
Picture this: the sun is coming up over the turquoise Caribbean Sea, the rod suddenly bends double, the reel screams, and on the other end of the line a blue marlin weighing hundreds of pounds is putting up a ferocious fight. Welcome to deep-sea fishing in Martinique.
Martinique is one of the Caribbean's must-fish destinations for big-game anglers. Warm, deep water, incredibly rich marine life and legendary fishing grounds make it a bucket-list spot for sport anglers.
Whether you're a seasoned angler chasing a thrill or a curious first-timer, this guide tells you what you need to know before you step aboard. Target species, best seasons, techniques and a step-by-step look at a trip with Carib Évasion: you'll know exactly what you're in for.
Why is Martinique such a great deep-sea fishing destination?
Martinique has a unique geographic edge. Sitting in the middle of the Lesser Antilles island chain, it's ringed by deep water just minutes from shore. No need to run for hours to reach the fishing grounds: the seafloor plunges quickly to more than 600 ft (several hundred meters), right where the big pelagics roam.
Two areas stand out: the Saint Lucia Channel to the south and the Dominica Channel to the north. These passages between the islands create nutrient-rich currents that naturally draw big predatory fish.
On top of that, there's a major advantage: about thirty FADs (fish aggregating devices) are set around the island. These floating structures draw in small baitfish, which in turn attract predators like marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado). The result: your odds of a catch go way up.
Add a stable tropical climate and water that stays between 79°F and 84°F (26–29°C) all year, and it's easy to see why Martinique draws sport-fishing fans from every corner of the globe.
Which big-game species can you target in Martinique?
Martinique's waters are full of world-class game fish. Here are the five headline species you can go after on a trip with Carib Évasion.
Blue marlin — king of the sea
This is the ultimate deep-sea fishing trophy. Blue marlin can reach 13 ft (4 m) in length and weigh over 1,760 lb (800 kg), though most fish caught in Martinique fall between 220 and 660 lb (100–300 kg). The fight is spectacular: leaps clear of the water, powerful runs, and a battle that can last more than an hour. The IGFA world record stands at 1,402 lb (636 kg) — the stuff dreams are made of!
In Martinique, blue marlin are caught from June onward, with the best months running from December to February.
Yellowfin tuna — the tireless fighter
Yellowfin tuna is one of the toughest opponents out there. Fast, powerful and built for endurance, it gives even experienced anglers an intense fight. You'll find it year-round in Martinique's waters, with fish that can top 175 lb (80 kg).
Its meat, prized for sashimi and tartare, is a delicious bonus to take home after the trip.

Atlantic sailfish — the ocean's acrobat
You can't miss its oversized dorsal fin, which unfurls like a sail. The sailfish can reach 6.5 ft (2 m) and 330 lb (150 kg). A real crowd-pleaser, it strings together leaps and surface runs. In Martinique, it's mainly targeted from June onward.
Mahi-mahi (dorado) — the colorful trophy
With its dazzling colors — electric blue, green and golden yellow — mahi-mahi is probably the most beautiful fish you'll ever catch. Hard-fighting and acrobatic, it puts on a show every time. You'll find it around the FADs, mainly from November to February.
Wahoo — the Caribbean's torpedo
Wahoo is the sprinter of the sea. Capable of bursts over 50 mph (80 km/h), it's one of the fastest fish in the world. The strike is lightning-quick and the fight explosive. Wahoo are caught year-round in Martinique, but the best catches often come between December and April.
Martinique deep-sea fishing season: when to go
Good news: deep-sea fishing in Martinique runs year-round, thanks to the tropical climate and the constant presence of pelagic fish. Still, some months are better than others depending on the species you want to target.

What to expect on a deep-sea fishing trip with Carib Évasion
Wondering what a day of deep-sea fishing in Martinique actually looks like? Here's how a typical trip goes with Captain Thierry and his crew.
Departure: heading offshore
Meet at Case-Pilote harbor, on the Caribbean coast northwest of Fort-de-France, at 7 a.m. (or 2 p.m. for afternoon trips). Thierry and his team welcome you aboard the Albatros 972, a Fusion 31 fully equipped for big-game fishing. A safety briefing, a walk-through of the gear, and you're off to the spots the captain has scouted.
The run out and rigging up
After a 20- to 40-minute run, the boat reaches the fishing grounds — FADs, drop-offs or the channels between the islands. The crew rigs the lines: trolling lures, live bait, rods set in the rod holders. The excitement builds.
The fight
Suddenly someone shouts, “Fish on!” The rod bends, the reel sings. This is the moment every angler waits for. With Thierry coaching you, you grab the rod and the fight is on. Depending on the species, it can last anywhere from 10 minutes to more than an hour.
“An exceptional offshore fishing trip with Thierry and Youri out of Case-Pilote. A real lesson in deep-sea fishing.” (translated from French)
— Axel Guillon
And the fish do show up. Joe, who came out with us last February, puts it this way:
“A superb day of offshore fishing — we all caught a tuna! Thierry is a very good captain and fisherman, and we laughed a lot!” (translated from French)
— Joe
Heading back and sharing the catch
At the end of the trip, the crew prepares the fish. Each angler can take home 4–7 lb (2–3 kg) of fresh fish — enough for a family feast that same evening. Throughout the day, cold drinks, homemade ti' punch (Martinique's rum cocktail) and fresh fruit are served on board.
