Where to Fish in Martinique: The Best Spots, Offshore to Inshore

Offshore grounds, the Caribbean (west) coast and where trips depart: here's where to find the best fishing spots in Martinique, and why you don't need to know them ahead of time when you fish with a local captain.

Wondering where to fish in Martinique? The real answer depends on what you're looking for. The island gives you two seas in one: the open ocean, home to the giants of deep-sea fishing, and the gentler Caribbean coast, ideal for families. The good news: with a local captain, you don't need to know the spots. We take you straight to the day's best spots, based on the weather, the currents and the season.

Here's a quick tour of Martinique's fishing grounds, and where trips depart.

Offshore: the drop-off and the FADs, deep-sea fishing territory

Just a few miles off the coast, the seafloor plunges hundreds of feet (several hundred meters). This is the drop-off, where the big predators hunt: blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, swordfish, mahi-mahi (dorado) and wahoo.

Two channels between the islands supercharge these fishing grounds: the Dominica Channel to the north and the Saint Lucia Channel to the south, where nutrient-rich currents naturally draw in fish. On top of that, some thirty FADs (fish aggregating devices) are spread around the island. They hold pelagic fish and seriously improve your odds of a hookup.

Martinique's big advantage: all of this is just 20–40 minutes away by boat. It's home turf for our deep-sea fishing trips in Martinique.

The Caribbean coast: from Case-Pilote to Saint-Pierre

For a more relaxed trip, head for the stunning northern Caribbean shoreline between Case-Pilote and Saint-Pierre, facing Mount Pelée, the island's volcano. The water here is sheltered and full of fish: jacks and wahoo, plus snappers, porgies and other red-hued species, are caught just a short run from shore.

Calm seas, frequent bites, postcard scenery: this is where we take families inshore fishing in Martinique, with kids ages 5 and up welcome aboard.

Where do trips depart? Case-Pilote harbor

All our trips leave from Case-Pilote harbor, a small, authentic fishing port on the Caribbean coast, in the north-central part of the island. It's the ideal starting point, with quick runs to both the offshore drop-off and the inshore grounds.

Getting there is easy: Case-Pilote is only about 15 minutes from Fort-de-France and Schœlcher. You'll get the exact meeting point when you book — see our practical info and directions.

Staying in the south (Les Trois-Îlets, Sainte-Anne, Le Marin)?

We get this question a lot. Deep-sea fishing happens off the Caribbean coast (the north-central part of the island), so Case-Pilote is still your best departure point for reaching the big pelagics, wherever you're staying.

If you're based down south, in Les Trois-Îlets, Sainte-Anne or Le Marin, allow about 40–50 minutes by car to Case-Pilote. The south is more about the lagoon and white-sand shallows; for offshore sport fishing, the drive is well worth it. Not sure how to plan your day? Talk to the captain directly.

Where to fish in Martinique, based on what you're after

Either way, the captain takes you wherever the fish are that day — that's the whole point of a guided trip. To find out what you'll catch out there, read what fish you can catch in Martinique, and check the Martinique fishing regulations (zones, size limits, protected species).
