What Fish Can You Catch in Martinique?
From offshore giants to the red reef fish along the coast: here are all the species you can catch in Martinique, when they're in season and where to find them.
Martinique gives you two seas in one. Offshore, you'll find the big pelagics of deep-sea fishing, from marlin to wahoo. Inshore, it's reef and coastal fish that are easier to catch and perfect for families. Here's a rundown of what fish you can catch in Martinique on each type of trip. For a detailed profile of every species, head over to our Martinique fish species guide.
Offshore: the big pelagics of deep-sea fishing
This is sport fishing at its finest: trolling beyond the drop-off. Here are the five marquee species you can target on a deep-sea fishing trip in Martinique:
- Blue marlin — the ultimate trophy. Phenomenal power and spectacular jumps; most catches weigh between 220 and 660 lb (100–300 kg). Best season: December to February.
- Yellowfin tuna — a tireless fighter that's here year-round and can top 175 lb (80 kg). Its meat is a real treat to bring home.
- Atlantic sailfish — easy to recognize by its tall, sail-shaped dorsal fin; acrobatic and hard-fighting. Best from June on.
- Mahi-mahi (dorado) — the most colorful of them all, found around FADs (fish aggregating devices) from November to February.
- Wahoo — one of the fastest fish in the ocean, with lightning-fast strikes and explosive fights. Here year-round.

Inshore: jacks, snapper and other reef fish
Along the coast, in calm water, you'll target fish that are easier to catch but just as tasty. It's the ideal family fishing trip, open to kids ages 5 and up:
- Jack — quick and scrappy, it delivers a real thrill even close to shore. Pure fishing fun.
- Snapper — one of the West Indies' famous “red fish,” with fine, sought-after flesh, often caught early or late in the day.
- Porgy — another sturdy, red-hued fish and excellent eating.
- Mutton snapper (sorbe) — a bottom fish prized by those in the know and a Martinique inshore classic.
- Wahoo — it sometimes shows up close to shore, much to the delight of thrill-seeking anglers.

What fish can you catch in Martinique, season by season?
Good news: thanks to the tropical climate, you can fish in Martinique year-round. Deep-sea fishing is at its best from December to February, when almost every species is around, while inshore fishing stays productive in every season. What happens to the fish you catch?
You head home with your share of the catch: on average 4–7 lb (2–3 kg) of fresh fish per angler, enough for a family dinner that same night. Carib Évasion is committed to responsible fishing: we follow minimum size limits and practice catch and release on protected species.
